The focus of Unit 18 is the correct use of classifiers. There are 7 different types of classifiers that students will become familiar with and use. The only written test third year will cover this information.
Classifier – CL – handshape used to represent a noun.
Descriptive Classifier - DCL - handshape used to describe what something looks like.
Location Classifier - LCL - handshape used to show the location of something
Semantic Classifier - SCL – handshape that shows how an object moves through space
Instrument Classifier - ICL – handshape used which shows how something is used
Element Classifier - ECL – handshape used to show movement of “forces of nature” for example fire, light, water, and wind.
Body classifier – BCL – when area within the normal signing spaced is moved to represent the body when telling a story.
Body Part Classifier – BPCL – handshape used to represent a part of the body which is not located within the normal signing space.
