Purpose of this Course:
Late homework policy: All work must be completed within four school days of the assigned date. Tests are taken on the date a student returns to school after a scheduled test has been missed.
Extra credit is awarded from student response papers (relating to student experience) which will be written after completing participation in Deaf Community events such as bowling/softball games (ten points each), SNO (Silent night out) (10 points)MSAD Spring Play (25 points), and Deaf Awareness Days (25 points). Event dates will be announced in class.

Purpose of this Course:
- American Sign Language is the predominant language used within Deaf Culture.
- The purpose of this course is to teach both the language and culture of the Deaf population in the United States, so those students will be comfortable interacting within Deaf Community.
- Students will use everyday language functions and conversational behaviors appropriate to ASL.
- Students will develop stronger fluency communicating in ASL.
- Students in American Sign Language will learn how to express themselves and understand others using ASL.
- Students will cover units including use of
- descriptive classifiers
- location classifiers
- instrument classifiers
- semantic classifiers
- element classifiers
- conditional (if) clauses
- money
- decision making which will lead to the final project of retelling a fairy tale through use of storytelling principles practiced during the year.
- The course textbook is Signing Naturally 3.
- Students are expected to come to class with a pencil and paper.
- Each student will need a folder to keep the articles, worksheets, and a copy of the unit signs, which will be supplied to each student.
- The students will complete a videotext assignment for each of the seven units covered during class. If a student misses a class period, they will have four days to complete the work they missed.
- A Unit test will given at the end of unit 18. Test retakes are recommended for those students who failed the test with a 50% or below. Low score retakes must be taken within four days of the original test date. All other units will require students to show expressively what they have learned.
- Retakes for students absent, must take place the day the student returns to school. Tests include theory (a written component) and receptive skills (students write down in English what teacher signs).
- Expressive Tests are given periodically throughout the year.

- Videotapes of yourself signing stories/dialogues
Important points to remember:
- Regular attendance is crucial for successful completion of the course objectives.
- Outside practice of a minimum 1/2 hour daily (not during another class).
- Immediate application of skills in real communication is essential in acquiring signing fluency.
- Receptive and expressive skills are both emphasized from the beginning.
- Minimal voicing will be done as the class progresses into the semester.
Student expectations:
- Student must demonstrate respect at all times. Respect for the teacher, for other students, for American Sign Language, for Deaf Culture and for themselves.
- Students need to be attentive when the teacher is “talking”. This means watching the teacher with their eyes and not relying on their ears for information.
- Students must ask permission before leaving for the bathroom.
- No food or beverages other than water are allowed in the classroom without prior consent of instructor.
